Super Harvest Moon

Super Harvest Moon

On September 17th, 2024, the moon rised as an actual supermoon - an astronomical phenomenon, where the full moon looks larger and brighter than usual. The term supermoon is not an official astronomical term, but it is widely used in the media and popular culture. The moon was at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, called the perigee.

This time, it’s also a so called harvest moon - the full moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. The name harvest moon is derived from the tradition of farmers who used the light of the full moon to harvest their crops late into the night.

The image is a composite, where I used a recent capture of the area surrounding M71 as background, to add some depth.
